In the Netflix documentary Miss Americana, sitting on a front porch, while gripping a pen and a piece of paper, singer-songwriter Taylor Swift attempts to revisit her humble beginnings through her journals, which contain entries that reflect her personal life. At such a young age, Swift expresses raw emotions through her talent in songwriting, strumming her guitar while reimagining stories of love and heartbreak that prompted the pop star's immense fame.
Taylor’s rise to stardom
Swift, who was born in 1989 on the outskirts of Pennsylvania, had previously expressed her love for music as early as the age of 11. Brimming with so much hope in the town of Nashville, Tennessee, the hopeful tried to score opportunities by submitting song demos to various record labels, accompanied by her parents, Andrea Swift (mother) and Scott Kingsley Swift (father), in pursuit of a musical career. Presenting a brand new perspective on country music as her claim to fame came in the year 2006, she crosses paths with her former label, Big Machine Records, spearheaded by chief executive Scott Borchetta. With these opportunities coming her way, her first single, Tim McGraw, as part of her self-titled album, was released, and the rest is history.

The music industry has undeniably emboldened Swift as an artist and a storyteller, with her fans known as "Swifties" lining up for her merchandise and selling concert shows around the world, and her being visible in the spotlight for over 15 years. Despite releasing albums exploring different genres and winning over 11 Grammy recognitions and 46 other nominations through her intricate lyricism, she has faced challenges, struggles, and pressure dealing with her own self-esteem, coping with fame, social media, and how the public press framed her previous romantic relationships. With this, she also faced backlash from her fellow artists and fallouts involving her former record label, Big Machine Records, that altered the trajectory of her entire career, as the singer-songwriter opened up in the Netflix documentary Miss Americana.

Miss Americana becomes fearless

Following the huge success of her seventh studio album "Lover" in 2019, under her new record label Republic Records, home isolation brought by the pandemic led Swift to explore her songwriting process, which prompted the release of her ninth studio album "folklore," followed by its sister record "evermore," both in 2020. In an interview with pop culture website A.V. Club, the singer-songwriter attempts to disclose her approach to her songwriting process in three (3) particular categories: fountain pen style, glitter gel pen, and quill, in which both convey a unique sound ranging from modern pop to upbeat and poetic storytelling that her dearest fans have enjoyed. Revisiting the Netflix documentary Miss Americana, Swift described music and songwriting as her safe space as she uttered, "Everybody in music has their own niche specialty, a thing that they do that sets them apart from everybody else, and my storytelling is what it is for me."
